Lufthansa
and Fraport AG have signed an agreement to further optimize aircraft turnaround
processes at Frankfurt Airport. Together with Lufthansa’s innovation subsidiary
zeroG, the partners are introducing “seer”, a cutting-edge AI-powered camera
system.
The
aim is to use real-time data to make the turnaround process—every step from
aircraft arrival to departure—more transparent, efficient, and punctual.
Each
stage of ground handling, from docking the passenger boarding bridge to loading
baggage and refueling, is recorded by cameras. The AI system automatically
timestamps each step, enhancing both the quantity and quality of data
collected. All information is consolidated in a central database—a single
source of truth for all stakeholders.
Gradual
implementation across aircraft stands
The
AI-assisted turnaround solution follows an extensive development and pilot
phase launched in 2023. Between February and May 2024, Lufthansa and Fraport
tested the system at selected stands. Currently, “seer” is in use at five
parking positions, with expansion to 20 stands expected by the end of Q3 this
year. A gradual full rollout across the airport will follow.
“Transparent
ground operations allow us to further improve punctuality and service
quality—which especially benefits our guests,” said Jens Ritter, CEO of
Lufthansa Airlines. “That’s why we are investing in the modernization of our
processes using innovative technologies like the AI-driven ‘seer’ solution.
When all partners at Frankfurt Airport share their ground handling data, we
become more efficient and more punctual—together.”
Lufthansa
brings its operational know-how, while Fraport contributes airport-side
expertise. zeroG bridges both worlds, developing the underlying AI and computer
vision technology at the heart of “seer” and ensuring seamless integration into
existing workflows. All airlines and system partners at Frankfurt will benefit
from this innovation.
“At
Fraport, we are driving numerous AI initiatives to optimize airport operations,
reduce employee workloads, and improve customer satisfaction,” said Dr. Stefan
Schulte, CEO of Fraport AG. “The AI-powered turnaround is a perfect example.
With better data visibility, staff and partners can precisely understand each
process step and adapt accordingly. This improves not only individual
turnarounds but the overall efficiency of airport operations.”
“Aircraft
don’t generate revenue while on the ground—yet this is where the most complex
processes unfold under tight time constraints,” explained Manuel van Esch,
Managing Director of zeroG. “Our solution makes these processes visible,
measurable, and manageable in real time using camera-based AI. This increases
transparency, enhances punctuality, and improves resource utilization for both
airlines and airport operators.”
The
collaboration between Lufthansa, Fraport, and zeroG is a prime example of
innovation through partnership in aviation. By working together, these
stakeholders are setting new standards for operational excellence—strengthening
Frankfurt Airport’s position as an international leader.
