The digital travel platform Agoda has compiled a
selection of Asian destinations where food is central to the travel experience.
From aromatic street-side noodle stalls to historic markets and regional
comfort dishes, these cities demonstrate how culinary discovery can define an
entire journey. According to Agoda’s newly released 2026 Travel Outlook Report,
more travellers are planning trips with local cuisine, street food and
immersive food experiences in mind.
Krishna Rathi, Associate Vice President at Agoda,
notes the growing significance of food in trip planning: “Our 2026 Travel
Outlook Report shows that food is no longer just a nice-to-have on the
itinerary, it’s becoming a key reason people choose where to go, with a growing
share of travelers prioritizing local dishes and street food experiences when
planning their trips. From khao soi in Chiang Mai to tonkotsu ramen in Fukuoka,
Asia isn't just a destination anymore; it's a menu, and travelers want to taste
it all.”
Chiang Mai, Thailand
In the cool hills of Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai
offers rich, warming dishes such as khao soi – coconut curry noodles topped
with crispy strands – alongside sai ua (Northern sausage) and spicy chili dips
like nam prik ong. Night markets around the old city and the Chang Phuak Gate
invite visitors to wander, snack and soak up the relaxed rhythm of Lanna
culture.
Penang (George Town), Malaysia
George Town blends Malay, Chinese and Indian culinary
traditions in its hawker centres and kopitiams. Local favourites such as char
kway teow, asam laksa, nasi kandar and Hokkien mee line the colourful heritage
streets. Penang is a natural choice for travellers looking to experience
culture and cuisine side by side.
Hoi An, Vietnam
With its lantern-lit old town and riverside ambience,
Hoi An pairs atmosphere with distinctive central Vietnamese flavours. Visitors
can try cao lau, white rose dumplings and regional versions of banh mi in
family-run eateries and market stalls. Cooking classes and guided market visits
turn a stay in Hoi An into an immersive culinary introduction to the region.
Tainan, Taiwan
Long regarded as Taiwan’s food capital, Tainan is
famous for its traditional snacks and vibrant night market culture.
Specialities include dan zai noodles, milkfish dishes, coffin toast and
Taiwanese desserts such as shaved ice and tofu puddings. Historic temples and
old streets provide a fitting backdrop for a slow-paced journey through beloved
local flavours.
Jeonju, South Korea
Jeonju is celebrated as the birthplace of Jeonju-style
bibimbap, the colourful rice bowl topped with vegetables, meat and gochujang.
The city’s Hanok Village, teahouses and makgeolli taverns create a setting
where food and tradition meet. Travellers can explore a more traditional side
of Korean cuisine, complete with generous servings of banchan.
Fukuoka, Japan
On the island of Kyushu, Fukuoka draws food lovers
with its Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen – a rich pork-bone broth paired with thin
noodles. When night falls, the city’s yatai food stalls open along the
riverside, serving skewers, hotpots and regional specialities in a welcoming,
unpretentious setting.
Agoda offers access to more than six million holiday
properties, over 130,000 flight routes and more than 300,000 activities, all
bookable within a single itinerary. Travellers can explore the best deals via
Agoda’s mobile app and start planning their next culinary journey across Asia.
