The
first Musandam International Diving Festival has officially opened, bringing
together professional and amateur divers from across the globe to experience
Oman’s northern waters and spotlight the region’s eco-tourism potential.
The
four-day program features a variety of activities, from an underwater
photography contest showcasing Musandam’s vibrant marine life, to a kayak race
across Khor Qadah, as well as endurance challenges including free-diving and
swimming competitions.
Beyond
the contests, daily dialogue sessions host renowned experts such as world
record holder Ahmed Gabr, recognized for the deepest scuba dive, and three-time
Guinness World Record para-athlete diver Faisal Jawad, who share their
knowledge and experiences.
Sustainability
is a central theme: divers are planting corals, taking part in the region’s
largest reef-cleaning campaign, and attending workshops on diving medicine and
digital tools for tourism development. Exploratory dives to Musandam’s deepest
sea points underline the area’s potential as a global hub for adventure
tourism.
“This
event was designed to showcase Musandam’s waters and boost tourism,” said
Mubarak Al Rahbi, general director of the governor’s office. “Musandam is the
best place in the Middle East for diving. We organized this festival to
encourage visitors and establish Musandam as the region’s leading diving
destination.”
Organized
with the support of both government and private institutions, the festival
reflects Oman’s strategy of linking tourism with environmental protection,
strengthening Musandam’s reputation as one of the world’s most unique diving
spots.
