Order for 30 aircraft supports fleet renewal, fuel efficiency and international growth
Delta to Add Boeing 787 Dreamliner to Its Widebody Fleet

Delta Air Lines will add 30 Boeing 787 Dreamliner widebody aircraft as part of its ongoing fleet modernization. The order introduces the 787 as a new aircraft type for Delta and complements a previously announced commitment for 100 Boeing 737-10 MAX aircraft, with deliveries to begin upon certification. The move is designed to improve fuel efficiency, streamline operations and enhance the in-flight experience across Delta’s global network.

Fleet strategy focused on efficiency and customer experience

The new aircraft will replace less efficient, older widebodies over the coming decade. “Delta is building the fleet for the future, enhancing the customer experience, driving operational improvements and providing steady replacements for less efficient, older aircraft in the decade to come,” said Ed Bastian, Delta’s chief executive officer. He added that the aircraft will be operated by “the best aviation professionals in the industry,” delivering Delta’s service standards worldwide.

The order underscores the strength of the U.S. aerospace sector, with both the aircraft and their engines designed and manufactured in the United States.

Supporting Delta’s international expansion

The 787 commitment marks the next step in Delta’s international evolution. It broadens the airline’s long-haul capabilities and builds on a strong foundation of international growth supported by Delta’s domestic network and joint-venture partnerships in every major global region. Delta expects to operate the largest international schedule in its history this year.

“Today’s 787 order adds diversity to our widebody order book, while creating cost-efficient scale across all widebody fleets,” said Dan Janki, Delta’s chief financial officer. “Our fleet strategy is positioning Delta for the future by enhancing the customer experience and driving operational improvements.”

787-10 tailored for long-haul networks

Delta plans to deploy the 787-10 primarily on transatlantic and South American routes. Compared with the previous generation of widebody aircraft it will replace, the 787-10 offers approximately 25 percent better fuel efficiency per seat, increased capacity, larger premium cabins and enhanced cargo capability.

Passengers will benefit from a wide, quiet cabin with large, electronically dimmable windows and spacious overhead bins. The aircraft’s ability to cruise at higher altitudes contributes to smoother flights, while advanced engine and fuselage technologies help reduce cabin noise.

Industry partners highlight long-term collaboration

“We are excited that Delta Air Lines has selected the 787-10 to join its fleet of the future,” said Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. She emphasized the aircraft’s efficiency, range and passenger comfort as a strong match for Delta’s international growth and sustainability goals.

Delta has selected GEnx engines from GE Aerospace to power the aircraft and has entered into a long-term services agreement with the manufacturer. The engines use advanced carbon-fiber materials and blade designs to reduce weight, improve durability and increase efficiency. GE Aerospace Chairman and CEO H. Lawrence Culp, Jr. noted the partnership with Delta spans more than six decades.

Cabin product and onboard amenities

The new widebody aircraft will feature expanded premium seating, including Delta One Suites, which currently account for 45 percent of all Delta One seats across the airline’s widebody fleet. Additional Delta Premium Select and Delta Comfort seating will complement the Main Cabin. Onboard amenities will include fast, free Delta Sync Wi-Fi, more than 1,000 hours of complimentary in-flight entertainment, and enhanced food and beverage offerings.

Orders aligned with capital plans

The 787 order falls within Delta’s previously announced capital expenditure and capacity targets. With this commitment, the airline now has 232 narrowbody and 54 widebody aircraft on order for delivery in the coming years.
