Taipei will unveil a new architectural and tourism
highlight this spring. The Danjiang Bridge, linking Bali and Tamsui across the
Tamsui River, is scheduled to open to traffic in May 2026. Ahead of the
official launch, a series of pre-opening events from 17 April to 9 May will
give residents and international visitors the rare opportunity to step onto the
bridge before vehicles cross it.
A record-breaking landmark
The Danjiang Bridge is distinguished by the world’s
longest single-tower asymmetric cable-stayed span, setting a new global
engineering benchmark. It is also the final architectural work of Pritzker
Prize laureate Zaha Hadid and was named by CNN in 2025 as one of the world’s 11
architectural wonders. The structure connects the historic district of Tamsui
with Bali on the river’s left bank, creating a new gateway to Greater Taipei.
Spring celebrations across Tamsui and Bali
To mark the opening, Taiwan’s Highway Bureau under the
Ministry of Transportation and Communications, together with the New Taipei
City Government, has organised a programme of public events. While
participation slots for the 18 April bridge run and 19 April cycling experience
are already fully booked, further activities will continue from 25 April to 9
May.
The programme includes performances by the
internationally renowned Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, themed markets, large-scale
community walks and cultural events along the riverbanks. All pre-opening
events are free of charge, offering visitors an accessible way to engage with
the new landmark.
A new perspective on Greater Taipei
Spring is considered one of the most appealing seasons
to visit Taiwan, and the Danjiang Bridge adds a fresh dimension to the travel
experience. By day, visitors can explore Tamsui Old Street, Fisherman’s Wharf
and Bali’s scenic waterfront paths. From the bridge itself, views extend to
Guanyin Mountain and along the Tamsui River.
At dusk, the setting sun over Tamsui creates one of
northern Taiwan’s most celebrated panoramas. After nightfall, architectural
lighting transforms the bridge and skyline, offering a contrasting urban scene
suited for evening strolls and photography.
Local culinary specialities and cultural programming
complement the experience, presenting Taipei as a destination where natural
landscapes, urban heritage and contemporary design converge within a compact
travel radius.
With the opening of the Danjiang Bridge, Greater
Taipei introduces not only a new transport link but also a distinctive vantage
point from which to rediscover the city.
