A TUI travel agent with almost four decades of
experience has highlighted the most common mistakes made by British
holidaymakers booking their first cruise. Michelle Kirkham, Retail Manager at
TUI’s Brighton Holiday Store, says many travellers are still influenced by
outdated ideas about cruising and often focus too heavily on finding the
cheapest deal.
Outdated perceptions still deter newcomers
Kirkham, who has worked for TUI for 38 years and
helped hundreds of customers book cruises, says some first-time passengers
continue to view cruises as formal, old-fashioned or aimed mainly at older
travellers.
“First-time cruisers are often put off by outdated
myths, when the reality is completely different,” she said.
“People still think cruises are formal, old-fashioned
or just for older travellers. But modern ships are like floating resorts.
There’s something for everyone, whether you want relaxation, adventure or a
lively atmosphere.”
Price should not be the only deciding factor
According to Kirkham, the biggest mistake is choosing
a cruise purely on price rather than considering the ship, atmosphere and
overall holiday experience.
“The biggest error people make is choosing purely
based on price,” she explained. “A cheaper deal isn’t always better if it
doesn’t match what you want from your holiday. The secret is picking the right
ship and experience first.”
For first-time cruisers, she recommends looking
closely at the type of ship before focusing on the itinerary.
“You spend most of your time onboard, so the ship
really shapes your holiday. Whether you want something relaxed, family friendly
or adults only, that choice makes all the difference.”
Extra costs should be checked in advance
Another frequent source of confusion is what is
included in the cruise fare. While accommodation, main meals and entertainment
are usually covered, optional services may involve additional charges.
“Your accommodation, main meals and entertainment are
covered, but things like drinks packages, excursions and WiFi can cost extra.
Planning for that upfront makes everything stress-free.”
Marella Cruises offers an all-inclusive product as
standard, with tips and service charges included in the price.
Cabin choice can shape the experience
Kirkham also advises first-time passengers to consider
upgrading their cabin where their budget allows.
“If your budget allows, go for a balcony cabin. It
gives you space, privacy and those incredible sea views. It really elevates
your first cruise.”
She says many customers are surprised by how quickly
they adapt to life onboard.
“It’s just how easy it all feels. No packing and
unpacking, incredible service and endless choice. People settle into cruise
life almost immediately.”
Mediterranean cruises recommended for beginners
For travellers taking their first cruise, Kirkham
recommends a Mediterranean itinerary with frequent port calls and familiar
destinations.
She highlights Marella Cruises’ “Highlights of the
Mediterranean” itinerary, which includes cities such as Rome, Florence, Pisa
and Barcelona.
“It’s got real bucket list appeal,” she said. “You’re
seeing some of Europe’s most famous destinations in one holiday, with minimal
sea days, so there’s always something to explore. It’s a brilliant introduction
to cruising.”
Her final advice is to prepare the essentials without
planning every detail.
“Plan the essentials but don’t overthink it. Cruising
is designed to be effortless. Once you’re onboard, relax and enjoy it.”
