Royal Caribbean confirms plans for expanded Mahahual community centre

Royal Caribbean has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to the Mexican community of Mahahual by confirming plans to develop a new and expanded Mahahual K'iin Community Center. The larger facility is designed to provide improved access to educational, recreational and cultural programmes while creating new spaces where residents can meet, learn and connect.

Larger centre in a more accessible location

The new community centre will replace the existing facility that has served Mahahual since 2014. Located along the Carretera Cafetal–Mahahual in the centre of town, the new site has been chosen to make its programmes and services more accessible to local residents.

The name "Mahahual K'iin", meaning "the sun of Mahahual", was selected through a community vote and reflects the centre's role as a welcoming gathering place rooted in local identity.

Jason Liberty, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, said the project demonstrates the company's long-term commitment to the community.

"Mahahual is an important community for Royal Caribbean, and the Mahahual K'iin Community Center reflects the long-term partnership we want to continue building here," he said. "This next phase is about turning commitment into action by creating a welcoming place where children can learn, families can gather and neighbors can connect."

Focus on education, recreation and community life

The new centre will feature flexible indoor spaces for workshops, educational activities and community events, alongside outdoor recreational facilities including a football pitch for youth programmes and community matches, as well as multi-purpose basketball and volleyball courts.

Construction is expected to begin once all required permits and approvals have been obtained.

Senaida Gómez, Director of the Mahahual K'iin Community Center, said the project reflects the aspirations of local residents.

"The Mahahual K'iin Community Center is the result of the strength, participation and dreams of our community," she said. "This new phase will allow us to expand our impact, strengthen our programs and create safe spaces for children, young people and families."

Building on more than a decade of community support

Since opening in 2014, the existing community centre has hosted educational workshops, volunteer programmes and activities promoting learning, creativity, health and community engagement.

According to Royal Caribbean, the new facility will significantly expand these programmes by providing additional space, better accessibility and more opportunities for residents of all ages.

Part of a broader community investment strategy

The project forms part of Royal Caribbean's wider commitment as owner and operator of the Port of Costa Maya. The company says it will continue working with residents, community organisations and local authorities on initiatives that support community development, environmental stewardship and economic opportunities in Mahahual.
