Malaysia is reinforcing its position as a trusted
healthcare destination for Indonesian patients. Returning to Medan after its
last major outreach in 2022, Malaysia Healthcare is reconnecting with a market
that increasingly seeks timely treatment and reliable second medical opinions
abroad. The initiative reflects sustained demand for internationally accredited
care, specialised expertise and patient-focused services at competitive costs.
Strong corridor between Medan and Penang
Over the years, a well-established healthcare corridor
has developed between Medan and Penang. The region covers a population of more
than 15 million people, with Medan serving as a key gateway for patients from
across North Sumatra, including Aceh, Padang, Pekanbaru and Binjai.
Geographical proximity plays a decisive role. At a
distance of around 160 kilometres across the Straits of Malacca, Penang can be
reached in approximately 40 to 45 minutes by air. Around 56 weekly flights
connect Medan with Malaysia’s major hospital hubs, making access to treatment
both fast and convenient.
Indonesian patients are a central pillar of Malaysia’s
medical tourism sector, accounting for roughly 65 per cent of total revenue.
This sustained demand has significantly shaped the country’s healthcare travel
ecosystem.
Strategic focus on regional collaboration
The Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council continues to
strengthen its engagement in Medan under the national Malaysia Healthcare
brand. Guided by the “Healing Meets Hospitality” positioning and aligned with
the Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026, the initiative aims to deepen
regional cooperation and improve access to trusted treatment options across
Southeast Asia.
Leading hospitals engage directly with patients
As part of the programme, Malaysia Healthcare is
bringing a broad delegation of leading hospitals to the city through MHX Medan
2026. Participating institutions include Island Hospital Penang, Institut
Jantung Negara, Mahkota Medical Centre and Subang Jaya Medical Centre,
alongside a wide range of specialised providers covering cardiology, oncology,
orthopaedics, fertility treatment and comprehensive health screening.
Visitors will have the opportunity to consult
specialists directly, explore treatment pathways and obtain second opinions on
complex diagnoses. The format is designed to provide clarity for patients
considering treatment abroad while strengthening ties between healthcare
providers and regional partners.
Ambitious targets for 2026
MHX Medan 2026 builds on the results of the 2022
edition, which generated 1,514 patient enquiries. The organisers now aim to
exceed this benchmark with a target of at least 1,665 healthcare leads from the
Medan market.
The event is expected to attract not only patients and
families seeking medical guidance, but also facilitators and industry
stakeholders interested in expanding Malaysia–Indonesia healthcare
collaboration.
