Tourexpi
Nature
and adventure are two elements best combined in Albania. The country's
enchanting landscape, made of broad plains, verdant forests and the highest of
peaks, offers endless possibilities for all nature-lovers to explore some of
the most breathtaking sceneries one can imagine.
With
21.5% of its territory designated as a protected area, Albania is home to lush
greenery and stunning wildlife, providing travelers with the opportunity to
become one with nature and observe a diverse array of species in their natural
habitats.
This
side of Albania has been attracting more and more attention in the past few
years, inviting travelers to go beyond the now world-renowned coastline. So, if
you want to explore nature through adventures that cater to all senses, this is
what your list should include.
Hiking
and trekking
The
Accursed Mountains (also known as the Albanian Alps) are blessed with some of
the most incredible views one can imagine. The destination is popular among
hikers all year round, offering the perfect escape and breath of fresh air from
the hustle and bustle of the big city.
But
this is not the only famous mountain range the country is known for, as it also
boasts numerous other peaks scattered throughout the entire territory, such as:
Tomorri, Dajti, Çika, Nёmёrçka, or Korab, with varying levels of challenges for
all hikers.
Despite
a notable growth in hiking in the past few years, this aspect of tourism is
still fairly new, so you might need the help of a professional guide or an
experienced local to guide you through the pathways.
Rafting
and kayaking
Albania
is also home to various valleys with magnificent rivers and streams, perfect
for water adventures. The upper valleys of Osum are the preferred destination
of those who love rafting, as the stunning canyons span 17 kilometers.
Adventurers
can also explore the Valbona and Shala valleys in the Alps, as well as the
Komani lake in the north, or they can travel south to explore the Vjosa river
and Devoll valley.
For
those who are into canoeing, amazing adventures await you in the Tujani scale
near the capital, Tirana, the mouth of Mat river and the Albanian Riviera,
where you can canoe with a view.
Paragliding
Albania's
topographic conditions provide plenty of opportunities for paragliding and
related sports, to local enthusiasts and tourists as well.
One
of the most famous destinations, even for international practitioners, is
Llogara, located in the southern part of the country. Those who choose this
spot can get a stunning view of the Albanian Riviera just beneath their feet.
Other
such amazing spots for this kind of activity include Morava near Korça, mount
Dajti in Tirana, or Tarabosh in Shkodra, where you can enjoy the various
landscapes of the country.
Birdwatching
The
coastal wetlands of Karavasta are the westernmost breeding site for the
Dalmatian Pelican. You can spot this magnificent species with your binoculars
if you visit the Divjakё-Karavasta National Park, where the lagoon is located.
Birdwatching
adventures also await you in Kune-Vain, Patok, Tale, Narta Lagoon, the nature
reserve alongside the Drin river (home to eagles, spoonbills, and herons), as
well as the lake of Shkodra.
Other
notable activities offered in the country are: climbing, cycling and mountain
biking, horse riding, sailing, fishing, diving, rally and racing, camping and
astro tourism.
