Boeing and United Airlines have completed flight tests
of an advanced digital communication system intended to streamline information
exchange between the flight deck, air traffic control and airline operations
centers. A United 737-8 served as the 2025 Boeing ecoDemonstrator Explorer
during the trials.
The two-week test program evaluated Internet Protocol
Suite (IPS) standards — internet-based data links expected to improve
operational efficiency and flight safety while reducing congestion, fuel burn,
operating costs and emissions. Test flights took place in the United States
from Houston and in Europe from Edinburgh.
Industry Leaders Highlight Strategic Importance
Boeing Chief Technology Officer Todd Citron called the
collaboration a major step toward faster and more reliable digital
communication across commercial aviation. United’s 737 Chief Test Pilot Andy
McKee emphasized the project’s role in supporting ongoing upgrades to global
air traffic management systems.
Part of a Broader Innovation Program
Since 2012, Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator program has
tested more than 250 technologies in real operational environments to improve
safety, sustainability and overall efficiency.
This year’s IPS testing involved U.S. and European
government agencies, aerospace suppliers, communications providers and academic
partners. It marks the final phase of a decade-long development effort to
prepare the technology for future operational use.
