Biman Bangladesh Airlines has signed an agreement to acquire ten Airbus aircraft as part of a long-term fleet modernisation and expansion programme. The deal, announced on 7 October 2026, includes four Airbus A350-900 widebody aircraft for international long-haul services and six A321neo narrowbody jets intended primarily for regional operations. Deliveries are expected to begin around 2033.
The agreement marks an important development for Bangladesh's national carrier, whose existing operational fleet consists entirely of aircraft from other manufacturers. According to the airline, none of its 19 aircraft currently in service are Airbus models. Introducing the European manufacturer's aircraft will therefore represent a significant change in Biman's fleet composition and future operational planning.
The Airbus agreement also follows substantial additional commitments to Boeing. In September, Biman ordered another eleven aircraft from the US manufacturer, bringing its total Boeing orders during 2026 to 25. Together, the procurement programmes indicate an ambitious long-term investment strategy aimed at expanding international connectivity, renewing existing capacity and supporting growing demand for air travel to and from Bangladesh.
Widebody and narrowbody aircraft for different markets
The four Airbus A350-900 aircraft are intended to strengthen Biman's long-haul operations. The widebody model is designed for intercontinental services and would give the airline additional flexibility when developing international routes and increasing capacity on established connections.
The six A321neo aircraft will primarily support regional operations. As a single-aisle aircraft, the A321neo is suited to routes where airlines require substantial passenger capacity without deploying larger widebody jets.
Combining the two aircraft types will allow Biman to address different segments of its international network, from shorter regional connections to long-distance services.
Benoit de Saint-Exupery, Executive Vice President for Sales at Airbus, said the combination of A350 and A321neo aircraft would provide an effective fleet strategy for the Bangladeshi carrier. He indicated that the new aircraft would support expansion into additional international destinations while helping the airline accommodate growing demand across its network.
The agreement does not specify which routes will receive the Airbus aircraft once deliveries begin. Their introduction from approximately 2033 also means that the fleet changes will form part of a longer-term development programme rather than an immediate capacity increase.
Boeing orders complement Airbus investment
Biman's decision to introduce Airbus aircraft comes alongside an extensive procurement programme involving Boeing.
The airline's latest Boeing order, placed in September 2026, comprises five 787-10 Dreamliners and six 737-8 aircraft. According to Boeing, the transaction increased Biman's total orders with the manufacturer during the year to 25 aircraft.
The 787-10 is designed for long-haul operations, while the 737-8 serves short- and medium-haul markets. These aircraft will complement the different operational capabilities offered by the Airbus models.
Operating aircraft from both manufacturers could provide Biman with greater flexibility in fleet development and capacity planning. However, introducing additional aircraft families also requires investment in technical support, maintenance arrangements, crew training and operational infrastructure.
The scale of the combined orders suggests that Biman is preparing for substantial changes to its fleet over the coming years. The eventual impact on its route network will depend on delivery schedules, market demand and the airline's future commercial strategy.
Aircraft deal strengthens European business ties
Beyond its operational significance, the Airbus agreement has attracted attention as a development in Bangladesh's economic relationship with Europe.
Michael Miller, the European Union's ambassador to Bangladesh, described the transaction as a strategic step in the country's expanding commercial and investment relations with European partners.
"We regard this agreement as a strategic step in Bangladesh's growing commercial and investment relations with Europe—relations built on international competitiveness, innovation and reliability," Miller said.
Bangladesh's Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat also welcomed the agreement, saying it would strengthen Biman's fleet, route network and operational capabilities.
For Bangladesh, investment in additional long-haul and regional aircraft could support broader ambitions to improve international air connectivity. The country's aviation market serves business travellers, tourists and passengers travelling for family and personal reasons, making network development an important consideration for the national carrier.
The introduction of Airbus aircraft will also diversify Biman's relationships with major international aircraft manufacturers.
With deliveries expected from around 2033, the Airbus agreement represents a long-term commitment rather than an immediate expansion of services. Together with the Boeing orders announced earlier this year, it establishes the framework for a substantial renewal and enlargement of Biman Bangladesh Airlines' fleet over the next decade.
