Agoda has released its latest ranking of the most
popular Asian destinations for the upcoming Lunar New Year, based on
accommodation search data. The analysis compares searches made in December 2025
with the same period a year earlier for check-ins during the Lunar New Year
travel window.
Tokyo remains number one, Taipei rises
Tokyo retained its position as the most searched
destination for Lunar New Year travel, confirming its continued appeal among
international and regional travellers. Bangkok ranked second, while Taipei
entered the top three for the first time.
Further down the ranking, Osaka placed fourth,
followed by Seoul in fifth position. Fukuoka ranked sixth, underlining Japan’s
strong overall presence in Lunar New Year travel searches.
New entries and stable favourites
Kuala Lumpur debuted in seventh place, while Sapporo
slipped one position to eighth. Singapore and Hong Kong continued to attract
high levels of interest, completing the top ten.
Year of the Horse inspires movement and discovery
The 2026 Lunar New Year marks the Year of the Horse,
traditionally associated with energy, movement and adventure. According to
Agoda, this symbolism is reflected in travel behaviour, with travellers seeking
lively urban destinations and new experiences. The Lunar New Year period, which
coincides with the arrival of spring, remains one of Asia’s most important
travel seasons, combining family reunions with opportunities for renewal and
exploration.
Industry perspective
Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President, Supply at Agoda,
said: “The Lunar New Year is all about adventure and discovery, especially in
the Year of the Horse. It’s exciting to see travellers embracing both
traditional favourites and new experiences during one of Asia’s top travel
moments. Whether it’s the bustling streets of Tokyo or the urban energy of
Singapore, Agoda is here to help travellers find great deals and create
memorable holiday experiences.”
Promotions around the festive period
In parallel with the travel peak, Agoda is running its
Mega Sale from 14 to 28 February, offering discounts of up to 60% on hotel
bookings. Additional flash sales with discounts of up to 70% are scheduled for
17 February, alongside special offers on flights and activities. Agoda VIP
members will receive early access to selected deals from 10 to 13 February.
The rankings highlight sustained interest in major
Asian cities during the Lunar New Year, while also pointing to a gradual
diversification of destination choices across the region.
