Lufthansa Group will begin upgrading more than 130
Airbus A320 aircraft with advanced real-time flight path technology from 2026.
The retrofit will equip 134 aircraft with the FANS-C digital communication
system, enabling the automatic transmission of 4D flight profile data –
including position, altitude, direction and time – to air traffic control. This
allows flight routes to be adjusted more precisely to actual conditions,
reducing fuel burn and CO₂ emissions while improving on-time performance.
The technology is already in regular operation in
Maastricht airspace, currently the most advanced in Europe for this capability,
and Lufthansa Group is working with other European air traffic control
authorities to expand its use. From 2028, the system will be mandatory for
newly delivered aircraft in the EU. By retrofitting its existing fleet,
Lufthansa Group is exceeding regulatory requirements, with nearly 200
A320-family aircraft expected to be equipped by 2028.
“We are focusing on digitalization to make flying even
more efficient,” said Grazia Vittadini, Chief Technology Officer of Lufthansa
Group. “Only if all partners modernize their systems in time will Europe
benefit from a better connected and more sustainable airspace.”
The retrofit programme is supported by the European
Commission, which will cover up to 50 per cent of the costs under the
Connecting Europe Facility. The upgrade represents a key step toward a more
digital, fuel-efficient and sustainable European airspace.
