Lufthansa Group has approved the purchase of 20 additional long-haul aircraft as part of its ongoing fleet renewal strategy. The order includes ten Airbus A350-900 jets and ten Boeing 787-9 aircraft, with deliveries scheduled between 2032 and 2034.

According to the company, the order has a list price value of approximately USD 7.7 billion. The approval was granted by the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG following a prior decision by the Executive Board.

Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, described the purchase as a long-term investment in fleet efficiency and sustainability.

“By ordering 20 additional long-haul aircraft, we are making a sustainable investment in the future of the Lufthansa Group,” said Spohr. “It is a clear commitment to a modern fleet, to premium quality, and to further reducing CO2 emissions.”

Focus on efficiency and lower emissions

The newly ordered aircraft are intended to replace older and less fuel-efficient long-haul models beginning in 2032. Lufthansa emphasised that both aircraft types consume less fuel, generate lower emissions and operate more quietly than previous generations.

According to the company, modern aircraft technology remains one of the most important tools for reducing aviation-related emissions.

The airline group also expects operational advantages from a more standardised fleet structure. These include lower maintenance and operating costs, increased operational flexibility and additional efficiencies in crew licensing, spare parts management and technical operations.

More than 230 aircraft currently on order

The decision regarding which Lufthansa Group airlines and hubs will receive the new aircraft has not yet been finalised.

Including the latest purchase, Lufthansa Group now has 232 aircraft on order, among them 107 next-generation long-haul aircraft.

The order forms part of what the company describes as the largest fleet modernisation programme in its history.
