The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has officially
welcomed United Airlines’ inaugural flight from Los Angeles to Bangkok, marking
the airline’s return to Thailand after an absence of over 11 years. The new
daily service, operated via Hong Kong, re-establishes direct connectivity
between the United States and Thailand and enhances convenience for North
American travellers seeking seamless access to Asia.
A milestone in U.S.–Thailand aviation ties
The new route strengthens Bangkok’s role as a major
long-haul gateway and supports United’s growing transpacific network. The stop
in Hong Kong also allows travellers from United’s San Francisco–Hong Kong
flights to connect effortlessly to Bangkok. With Los Angeles and San Francisco
serving as hubs to over 75 destinations across the Americas, the route provides
expansive travel options for leisure and business passengers alike.
A special welcome ceremony was held at Suvarnabhumi
Airport, where the Boeing 787–9 Dreamliner was greeted with a traditional water
salute. Distinguished guests included Mr. Robert F. Godec, U.S. Ambassador to
Thailand; Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of TAT; Mr. Marcel Fuchs,
Managing Director International Sales, United Airlines; Mr. Sarun Benjanirat,
Deputy Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT); and
Ms. Pranuengnuch Bamphensamai, Advisor 10, Airports of Thailand.
Strengthening tourism and cultural exchange
“The return of United Airlines marks a significant
milestone in the long-standing friendship between Thailand and the United
States,” said Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of TAT. “This new service not
only strengthens bilateral tourism and economic ties but also responds to the
growing interest among American travellers seeking meaningful, authentic
experiences in Thailand.”
United’s daily service between Los Angeles (LAX) and
Bangkok (BKK) operates with a Boeing 787–9 Dreamliner offering 257 seats across
Polaris Business, Premium Plus, and Economy classes. The inaugural flight UA
820 departed Los Angeles on 24 October at 23:15 and arrived in Bangkok on 26
October at 11:25, while the return flight UA 821 departs Bangkok daily at 16:55
and arrives in Los Angeles at 20:25 the same day, ensuring smooth transit
through Hong Kong.
A renewed spotlight on Thailand
United Airlines’ Bangkok service is the first by a
U.S. carrier since 2014, following the suspension of flights by both United and
Delta. Its resumption underscores Thailand’s appeal as a world-class tourism
destination and a trusted market for long-haul travel investment.
“The new United Airlines route enhances connectivity
from the U.S. West Coast and complements the rising number of arrivals from
North America,” added Ms. Thapanee. “It reinforces Bangkok’s reputation as a
leading tourism hub and gateway to diverse destinations across Thailand.”
The launch coincides with a surge in long-haul
arrivals from North America, supported by Air Canada’s nonstop Vancouver–Bangkok
service and global attention following high-profile productions such as The
White Lotus: Season 3, filmed in Thailand. These factors continue to elevate
Thailand’s image as a destination defined by warm hospitality, creativity, and
cultural richness.
Growing demand from the U.S. market
The United States remains one of Thailand’s most
promising long-haul markets. From 1 January to 24 October 2025, Thailand
welcomed 808,288 American visitors, a 5% increase compared to the same period
last year. The total number is expected to reach 1.09 million arrivals by
year-end, generating an estimated 62 billion Baht (approx. USD 1.7 billion) in
tourism revenue.
With United’s new Los Angeles–Bangkok connection,
Thailand once again opens its doors wide to American travellers—bridging
continents, cultures, and shared journeys between two vibrant nations.
