The
Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has hosted the 2025 Global Meaningful
Travel Summit in Krabi and Bangkok, marking the first time the event has taken
place in Southeast Asia. Co-organised with the non-profit Tourism Cares, the
summit brought together more than 40 travel executives, tour operators,
airlines, and media from the United States and beyond to explore how Krabi is
redefining tourism through the Krabi Prototype – TAT’s flagship model for
sustainable development.
A
living model of sustainability
Famed
for Maya Bay, the Phi Phi Islands, Railay Beach and its limestone landscapes,
Krabi is advancing long-term commitments to protect its environment and
community traditions. Recognised in 2023 on the Green Destinations Top 100
Stories list for its hot springs in Khlong Thom, the province has emerged as a
showcase of responsible tourism within Thailand’s Andaman Development Zone.
“TAT
is proud to show the world that sustainable tourism is not just a vision but a
reality,” said Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of TAT. “Krabi represents
the balance we want for all of Thailand—where natural beauty and local culture
are preserved while communities thrive. Through the Krabi Prototype, we
demonstrate that sustainable travel is possible, practical, and rewarding for
all.”
Immersive
experiences with local communities
Delegates
visited villages such as Laem Sak and Ban Nai Nang, where community-led
initiatives in waste management, traditional crafts, and tourism offered
practical models of sustainability. Eco-conscious activities showcased under
the Krabi Prototype include mangrove tours in Ban Thung Yee Peng and marine
conservation around Ko Ngai.
Eight
villages, including Koh Klang and Nai Nang, now play a leading role with
projects ranging from batik workshops and stingless beekeeping to multi-ethnic
cultural tourism. Strict pledges to keep beaches free of jet-skis and mass
furniture reflect the province’s long-standing community commitment to
sustainability.
Scaling
impact with standards and certifications
Krabi’s
achievements are anchored in collaboration with local stakeholders. The
province now counts:
·
16 operators honoured at the Thailand
Tourism Awards
·
119 STAR-certified businesses meeting
national sustainability standards
·
65 CF-Hotels reducing carbon
footprints through clean energy, solar power, plastic reduction, and local
sourcing
These
initiatives align Krabi with international benchmarks such as Green
Destinations recognition for Mu Ko Lanta National Park.
Broader
significance for Thailand
Beyond
tourism, Krabi remains Thailand’s second-largest palm oil producer and home to
rubber, Musang King durians, and robusta coffee, underlining the province’s
role in integrating agriculture and tourism. Its cinematic landscapes continue
to draw international productions, most recently Jurassic World: Rebirth.
Over
the past two years, TAT and Tourism Cares have expanded the Meaningful Travel
Map of Thailand to include more than 45 vetted organisations, 11 of which are
based in Krabi. By joining Tourism Cares’ global network of 160+ partners,
these operators extend their reach to international markets where demand for
sustainable travel is growing.
A
milestone for meaningful travel
“The
Global Meaningful Travel Summit in Krabi is more than a meeting—it is a
milestone,” Ms. Thapanee concluded. “By bringing the Krabi Prototype to centre
stage, we give the world a glimpse of Thailand’s future—where tourism
safeguards resources, strengthens communities, and delivers meaningful value to
travellers. Krabi is our prototype, and we aim to scale this model nationwide
to keep Thailand at the forefront of sustainable tourism.”
