Day trips are becoming an increasingly important part
of European city breaks, with many travellers using major cities as gateways to
nearby cultural landmarks, coastal destinations, and scenic countryside.
A new study by TUI Musement, based on Google search
volumes, has identified the 30 European cities from which travellers most
frequently search for day trips. The ranking reflects growing demand for
experiences that combine urban travel with short regional escapes.
London, Paris, and Rome top the list, followed by
Barcelona, Florence, Edinburgh, Milan, Dublin, Lisbon, and Athens.
London remains Europe’s leading gateway for excursions
With more than 260,000 searches related to day trips,
London ranked first in the study. Among the most popular excursions are visits
to Stonehenge, the UNESCO-listed city of Bath, and Windsor Castle. Tours linked
to filming locations from the television series Downton Abbey also continue to
attract strong interest.
Paris secured second place, driven by demand for trips
to the Palace of Versailles, Monet’s gardens in Giverny, and the island abbey
of Mont Saint-Michel.
Rome followed closely behind, with travellers
frequently searching for excursions to Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, Positano, and
Tuscany.
Mediterranean and cultural destinations dominate
searches
Barcelona ranked fourth, with Montserrat, the Costa
Brava, and even cross-border excursions to Andorra among the most searched day
trips.
Florence stood out as a gateway to Tuscany, with
Siena, Pisa, San Gimignano, and the Chianti wine region proving especially
popular.
In southern Europe, Lisbon and Athens also attracted
high search volumes. Travellers visiting Lisbon frequently searched for
excursions to Sintra, Cascais, Cabo da Roca, and Fátima, while visitors to
Athens showed strong interest in Delphi, Meteora, and nearby Greek islands such
as Hydra and Aegina.
Nature and scenic landscapes drive interest in
northern Europe
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, scenic landscapes
remain a major attraction for day-trip travellers.
Edinburgh ranked sixth thanks to growing demand for
tours through the Scottish Highlands, Loch Ness, and Glencoe. Outlander-themed
tours also continue to attract visitors.
Dublin secured eighth place, with the Cliffs of Moher,
Giant’s Causeway, Wicklow Mountains, and Blarney Castle among the country’s
most searched excursions.
Milan also featured strongly in the ranking, largely
due to interest in Lake Como, Bellagio, Lugano, and rail journeys through the
Alps aboard the Bernina Express.
According to TUI Musement, the findings highlight how
travellers increasingly view city breaks not as isolated urban experiences, but
as starting points for broader regional exploration.
