IHG Hotels & Resorts is accelerating the expansion of its Vignette Collection across Greater China, adding properties in major metropolitan centres and emerging leisure destinations. The luxury collection is growing in Chengdu, Chongqing, Shanghai, Beidaihe, Qiandao Lake and Sanya during 2026, alongside the recent addition of The Hari Hong Kong. The expansion strengthens IHG's presence in China's luxury hospitality market while broadening the geographical reach of a brand built around individually distinctive hotels.
Unlike conventional hotel brands that emphasise standardised design and guest experiences, Vignette Collection allows properties to retain their individual identities while operating within IHG's international hospitality network. The approach is intended to appeal to travellers seeking accommodation that reflects the culture, architecture and character of its destination. Participating hotels develop their own guest experiences, ranging from artistic collaborations and regional crafts to culinary traditions and environmental initiatives.
The growing portfolio also reflects the diversification of China's premium travel market. While Shanghai, Chengdu and Chongqing remain important urban destinations, coastal locations such as Beidaihe and Sanya, together with the scenic Qiandao Lake region, provide opportunities for leisure-oriented stays. For international travel advisors and luxury tour operators, the collection offers a wider selection of properties that can be incorporated into individually designed itineraries combining cities, cultural experiences and resort destinations.
Individual Hotel Identities Shape the Experience
Vignette Collection operates around three defining principles: One-of-a-Kind Stays, Memorable Rituals and A Means for Good. Each is intended to give participating hotels a recognisable individual character while maintaining a common approach to luxury hospitality.
At TFT Chongqing, Vignette Collection, the design draws inspiration from the city's bridges and its location at the confluence of two rivers. Bridge-related motifs appear throughout the property, extending from interior details and room keys to themed afternoon tea and storytelling elements.
THE ONE Shanghai Downtown, Vignette Collection, takes a different approach by referencing the city's Art Deco architectural heritage. Its interiors reflect Shanghai's historical design traditions, while a partnership with a local art centre encourages guests to discover the city's contemporary creative community.
These concepts are particularly relevant to travellers who regard their accommodation as part of the destination experience rather than simply a place to stay.
Rita Jiang, Chief Commercial & Marketing Officer, Greater China, IHG Hotels & Resorts, said that luxury travellers increasingly seek personalised experiences connected to their individual interests.
“Every hotel has its own character, and every destination has a story worth discovering,” Jiang explained.
Local Traditions Become Signature Experiences
Another component of the collection's positioning is the introduction of distinctive activities and rituals developed specifically for individual properties.
At Shanghai Snow World Hotel, Vignette Collection, located within the Shanghai L+SNOW Indoor Skiing Theme Resort, guests can participate in an après-ski gathering marked by the ringing of a bell. The hotel also offers introductory sessions designed to familiarise first-time visitors with skiing.
The concept brings elements of traditional winter resort hospitality into an indoor leisure environment, illustrating the growing diversity of China's tourism infrastructure.
At Resea Hotel Beidaihe, Vignette Collection, the signature experience focuses on the coastal landscape. Guests are invited to welcome the sunrise over the sea, making the surrounding natural environment an integral part of the stay.
Palm Springs Hotel Chengdu, Vignette Collection, draws on the cultural heritage of Sichuan. Activities inspired by traditional Shu embroidery and fragrance-making introduce visitors to regional craftsmanship and provide opportunities for hands-on cultural experiences.
For travel planners, such activities offer additional ways to differentiate luxury itineraries and incorporate cultural experiences directly into accommodation products.
Art and Sustainability Support Local Communities
IHG is also positioning community engagement and environmental initiatives as part of the Vignette Collection concept.
At The Hari Hong Kong, located in Wan Chai, the Hari Art Prize supports emerging artists based in the city. The initiative connects the hotel's contemporary luxury positioning with Hong Kong's creative sector and provides a platform for local artistic talent.
WM Hotel Hong Kong, Vignette Collection, takes inspiration from the waterfront environment of Sai Kung. Working with a local non-profit international school, the property has organised a beach clean-up at Sha Ha Beach to encourage awareness of marine conservation.
Environmental measures are also being introduced into hotel operations. At The Azure Ningbo, Vignette Collection, coffee grounds and food waste are converted into compost for plants and hotel gardens.
These initiatives demonstrate how individual properties are incorporating community relationships and resource management into their operations, although their environmental and social effects will depend on the scale and continuity of the respective programmes.
Expansion Broadens Luxury Travel Options
The additions across Greater China extend Vignette Collection into destinations with markedly different tourism profiles.
Urban properties in Shanghai, Chengdu and Chongqing primarily address travellers interested in business, culture, gastronomy and city experiences. Coastal hotels in Beidaihe, Hong Kong and Sanya provide alternatives for guests seeking leisure stays, while Qiandao Lake offers a different setting centred on natural scenery.
For IHG, the expansion increases the collection's visibility in one of the world's major hospitality markets while adding more distinctive properties to its luxury portfolio.
The strategy also gives independently characterised hotels access to the distribution and commercial infrastructure of an international hotel group without requiring them to adopt a uniform identity.
As demand for personalised luxury travel develops, this combination of international distribution and local individuality could become increasingly relevant to both hotel owners and travel intermediaries.
The latest additions illustrate IHG's intention to build Vignette Collection around destination-specific experiences, allowing travellers to explore Greater China through properties that reflect the cultural and geographical diversity of the region.
