Holland America Line is introducing a new signature lounge aboard Oosterdam as part of its extensive Holland America Evolution fleet modernisation programme. Named Bar 1873 after the year the company was founded, the venue will combine contemporary design, live music and historical exhibits in a two-level setting within the ship's central atrium. The project forms part of a wider transformation that will also bring new entertainment facilities and refreshed public spaces to the vessel.
The new lounge takes inspiration from the christening of Rotterdam V by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands in 1958. Under the theme May She Be Blessed, the design explores the maritime traditions surrounding ship naming ceremonies and the prominent role of royal godmothers in Holland America Line's history. Historical objects, artwork and architectural references will connect the company's Dutch origins with a contemporary onboard hospitality experience.
Bar 1873 is intended to become a recurring feature across ships participating in the Evolution programme, although each installation will interpret a different chapter of the company's history. The initiative reflects a broader approach to fleet renewal in which familiar venues and traditions are retained while accommodation, entertainment and guest facilities are updated to meet changing passenger expectations.
Dutch maritime history shapes the design
Developed in collaboration with London-based design company SMC, Bar 1873 will occupy part of Oosterdam's central atrium on Deck 2. Its most prominent feature will be a three-metre-high illuminated tulip sculpture, referencing both the Netherlands' national flower and Holland America Line's orange tulip emblem.
Visible from several levels of the atrium, the installation will provide a focal point for a lounge incorporating more than 200 historical and repurposed objects. A visual timeline, vintage-style maps and specially commissioned artwork will trace the company's development and its connections with Dutch maritime culture.
Other design elements draw on specific locations and vessels associated with Holland America Line. The lounge's fireplace takes inspiration from the company's former headquarters in Rotterdam, now operating as Hotel New York. Carpeting references the movement of light across the sea, while a central rug incorporates a design inspired by a clock aboard the historic SS Rotterdam.
Live entertainment will be another defining element. Piano performances are planned during pre-dinner cocktail hours and throughout the evening, complemented by selected appearances from vocalists and musicians associated with the cruise line's Vivace programme.
"One of the goals of Holland America Evolution is to celebrate the traditions that have always made us special while introducing fresh experiences for today's guests," said Beth Bodensteiner, President of Holland America Line.
She explained that future Bar 1873 venues would each draw on different historical themes, giving individual ships their own interpretation of the concept.
Cocktails and entertainment receive new focus
The historical narrative will also extend to the drinks menu. Oosterdam's Bar 1873 will introduce a signature cocktail named May She Be Blessed, reflecting the traditional blessing given to a ship before entering service.
Guests will be able to personalise the drink by selecting their preferred essence. The menu will also include contemporary interpretations of established cocktails alongside original creations inspired by the stories represented in the lounge.
Beyond Bar 1873, Oosterdam will receive an updated version of its Crow's Nest observation lounge. Known for its panoramic sea views, the venue will be adapted to accommodate a wider range of daytime activities and evening entertainment.
The revised programme will combine enrichment activities and informal gatherings during the day with expanded live music in the evening. Performances will feature songs from the 1970s through to contemporary popular music, creating additional opportunities for passengers to enjoy entertainment without leaving the observation lounge.
The changes are designed to make better use of existing public spaces throughout the day while preserving the relaxed atmosphere associated with the ship's established venues.
Fleet-wide transformation reaches six ships
Holland America Evolution represents the largest fleet investment programme in the company's 153-year history. The initiative will modernise all six Vista Class and Signature Class ships, beginning with Oosterdam and Zuiderdam and extending to the recently acquired Vista Class vessel Arcadia.
The programme will introduce refreshed accommodation, redesigned public areas and additional onboard experiences. Selected features from the company's newer Pinnacle Class ships will also influence the renovations, although the individual character and layout of the existing vessels will be retained.
For Holland America Line, the investment reflects the importance of updating established ships rather than relying exclusively on newbuilds to introduce contemporary facilities. The company is seeking to combine its traditional emphasis on destination-focused cruising with greater variety in dining, entertainment and onboard leisure activities.
The new Bar 1873 concept illustrates this approach by transforming the ship's maritime heritage into a visible part of the passenger experience. Rather than presenting historical material in a conventional exhibition, the lounge integrates it into a functioning social venue.
Bookings are already available for cruises aboard Oosterdam and Zuiderdam following their respective transformations. Further details about the modernisation programme and additional ship upgrades are expected as Holland America Evolution progresses across the fleet.
