Sanya is strengthening its position as a tropical
holiday destination by combining its beaches and marine attractions with
mountain scenery, cultural sites and an expanding range of summer experiences.
The coastal city on China's Hainan Island is also investing in measures
designed to make visits more comfortable during the hotter months.
From the underwater world of Atlantis Sanya to the
panoramic views from Luhuitou Scenic Area, the destination is increasingly
presenting its natural landscapes as part of an integrated tourism experience.
New night-time activities, coastal green corridors and specially designed
summer routes are intended to encourage visitors to explore beyond the beaches.
Atlantis brings visitors closer to marine life
The Lost Chambers Aquarium at Atlantis Sanya is one of
the city's major marine attractions. Its main viewing panel measures 16.5
metres in length and 8.3 metres in height, providing views into Ambassador
Lagoon.
The aquarium is home to more than 86,000 marine
animals representing 280 species. Golden trevally, leopard sharks and colourful
butterflyfish are among the creatures visitors can observe in the resort's
underwater environments.
Atlantis Sanya has also expanded its involvement in
marine conservation. To mark World Turtle Day 2026, the resort unveiled Turtle
House, a dedicated sea turtle breeding facility supported by an international
conservation team.
The programme builds on previous rescue and
rehabilitation work and now includes captive breeding and the release of
animals to strengthen wild populations. The initiative is intended to
contribute to marine biodiversity conservation in Hainan while raising public
awareness of threats facing sea turtles.
Luhuitou offers a panorama of city and sea
Away from the beaches, Luhuitou Scenic Area combines
natural scenery with one of Sanya's best-known folk love legends. The site
occupies a coastal hill surrounded by the sea on three sides and has become one
of the city's cultural landmarks.
Visitors can travel along winding mountain roads to
the summit, where the panorama encompasses Sanya's mountains, urban areas,
rivers, harbour, islands, bays and coastline. The elevated viewpoint offers a
different perspective on a destination more commonly associated with its
beaches and resorts.
Luhuitou is also among the attractions expanding their
night-time programmes. Viewing boardwalks remain accessible after dark, while
activities including fluorescent night runs are intended to broaden the city's
evening tourism offer.
Cooling systems and green corridors improve summer
travel
Sanya has introduced a series of measures aimed at
making tourism more comfortable during the hot summer season. Mist-cooling
systems have been installed at the airport, while coastal green corridors now
connect seafront landscapes with ecological attractions and provide additional
areas for walking.
The city has also developed ten summer routes for
different types of visitors. The itineraries combine mountain and sea
sightseeing with coastal experiences and are designed to encourage exploration
of different parts of the destination.
The expansion of night-time attractions adds another
dimension to the strategy. By shifting some activities into the cooler evening
hours, Sanya aims to extend the time visitors spend at attractions while
offering alternatives to daytime sightseeing.
With tropical beaches, extensive marine attractions
and mountain viewpoints overlooking the South China Sea, Sanya is positioning
its contrasting landscapes at the centre of its summer tourism offer.
