Carnival Tropicale opens bookings ahead of 2028 Galveston debut - Get updated on what's happening in tourism!

Carnival Cruise Line has opened reservations for Carnival Tropicale, its newest ship and the fifth and final vessel in the Excel class. Currently under construction at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, the ship will enter service from Galveston, Texas, on April 15, 2028.

The new vessel will operate cruises of four, five, six and eight days, connecting the Texas homeport with destinations across the Caribbean, Bahamas and Mexico. Its itineraries will include Carnival’s Paradise Collection destinations Celebration Key, RelaxAway at Half Moon Cay, Isla Tropicale and Puerta Maya, alongside established ports such as Progreso and Nassau.

Galveston becomes homeport from April 2028

Carnival Tropicale is being developed with a particularly strong connection to its future Texas base. The ship will carry the Star of Texas on its bow when it begins sailing from Galveston.

Ben Clement, Executive Vice President of Maritime and New Builds at Carnival Cruise Line, said the opening of reservations marked an important step towards the ship’s 2028 debut. He pointed to the combination of new attractions, dining concepts and itineraries across the Caribbean, Bahamas and Mexico as key elements of the programme being developed for the Texas market.

The start of sales was marked at Meyer Werft with a Texas-themed event. Shipyard and Carnival representatives celebrated the vessel’s future homeport with western-style decorations and a Texas barbecue.

Meyer Werft CEO André Walter, who took up his position on July 1, 2026, described Carnival Tropicale as another product of the longstanding relationship between the Papenburg shipyard and Carnival. It is the fifth Excel-class vessel Meyer Werft has built for the cruise line.

New family zone centres on six waterslides

Family entertainment will be one of the defining features of Carnival Tropicale. The new Sunsation Point will extend across several decks and combine daytime activities with entertainment continuing into the evening.

At its centre will be Carnival WaterWorks Ultra, which Carnival describes as its most family-oriented water park at sea. Six waterslides are planned, including SunSoaker, Turning Tides and Racing Currents, alongside splash areas designed for younger children.

Other activities will include a redesigned Fairway 66 miniature golf course inspired by Route 66, sports courts and the Treehouse Adventure Trail with elevated netted pathways and obstacles. The Vault Retrocade will combine classic arcade games with newer gaming experiences. Extended evening opening hours are also planned for the water park.

New restaurants span Hawaii, Mediterranean and US coasts

Carnival Tropicale will also introduce dining concepts grouped under Carnival’s Next Course programme. Uku Lei Lei will combine Hawaiian-inspired food with Asian influences, while Fetaccine will bring together elements of Greek and Italian cuisine.

Emeril’s Coastal Seafood will focus on seafood dishes inspired by different coastal regions of the United States. The concept has been developed in partnership with chef Emeril Lagasse, Carnival’s Chief Culinary Officer.

Entertainment draws on golden age of show business

Another new element will be an entertainment concept inspired by the golden era of show business. Carnival plans dedicated venues and experiences around the theme, although further details have yet to be announced.

More information on entertainment and other onboard features is expected as construction progresses in Papenburg. With reservations now open more than a year before its debut, Carnival Tropicale is already becoming a central part of the cruise line’s future programme from Galveston and its broader expansion in the Texas market.
