As the Lyrid meteor shower peaks on 22 April and the
Eta Aquariids follow on 6 May, Agoda is drawing attention to lesser-known
stargazing spots across Asia. The platform highlights six destinations where
minimal light pollution and distinctive landscapes create ideal conditions for
observing meteor showers and the Milky Way.
Interest in stargazing travel has been rising as more
travellers seek quiet, remote environments that offer both natural immersion
and a sense of distance from urban life. Against this backdrop, Agoda’s
selection combines clear night skies with cultural and scenic diversity,
encouraging exploration beyond established tourist routes.
From salt deserts to tropical islands
In India, the region of Kutch in Gujarat offers wide,
unobstructed views across its expansive salt desert. The reflective white
terrain amplifies the night sky, creating a striking visual setting for meteor
showers. Beyond astronomy, the area is also known for its crafts and local
traditions.
Japan’s Iriomote Island in Okinawa provides a
contrasting environment. Dense jungle, untouched beaches and limited
development ensure exceptionally low light pollution. As part of the Yaeyama
Islands, the location combines biodiversity with clear skies, offering a
secluded setting for nighttime observation.
Heritage landscapes and remote coastlines
In South Korea, Gyeongju pairs stargazing with
cultural depth. Known for its historical sites and temples, the city’s rural
outskirts provide clear skies for night observation, while daytime exploration
centres on heritage and architecture.
Further south, the Philippine island of Batanes stands
out for its isolation and dramatic scenery. Rolling hills and rugged coastlines
create an open horizon, allowing the Milky Way to be seen with remarkable
clarity. The destination also offers insight into the traditions of the Ivatan
community.
Natural wonders under dark skies
Vietnam’s Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park adds a
geological dimension to stargazing. Its karst formations and extensive cave
systems form a striking backdrop, while the remote setting ensures minimal
artificial light. The area’s biodiversity and landscape diversity further
enhance its appeal.
In Taiwan, the Alishan mountain range provides
high-altitude viewpoints and stable atmospheric conditions. Known for its
sunrise and sunset panoramas, the region also delivers clear night skies,
making it a year-round destination for observing celestial phenomena.
“Stargazing is a magical experience that allows
travellers to connect with the universe in a profound, contemplative way,” says
Jay Lee, Regional Director North Asia at Agoda. “With a wide array of
accommodation, flight and activity options on our platform, Agoda is thrilled
to guide travellers to these hidden gems where the night sky truly comes
alive.”
With more than six million accommodation listings,
over 130,000 flight routes and more than 300,000 bookable activities, Agoda
positions itself as a comprehensive platform for planning stargazing journeys
that combine nature, culture and remote travel experiences.
