Autumn is one of Asia’s most distinctive travel seasons, drawing visitors to landscapes transformed by brilliant red, orange and golden foliage. While destinations such as Kyoto attract large numbers of travellers during the annual colour change, quieter regions across the continent offer equally appealing opportunities to experience the season. Digital travel platform Agoda has identified five destinations in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, India and Nepal where autumn scenery combines with cultural attractions and outdoor activities.
The recommendations come as changing weather patterns make the timing of peak autumn colours increasingly difficult to predict. Warmer temperatures and less consistent seasonal conditions can affect when trees reach their most colourful stage. For travellers planning journeys around foliage displays, choosing the right destination and travel period has therefore become an important consideration.
Agoda’s selection extends beyond traditional leaf-viewing destinations to include historic villages, mountain forests, lakeside landscapes and seasonal festivals. The suggested travel periods range from late October through November, depending on the location. Several destinations also offer opportunities to experience local celebrations, allowing visitors to combine nature-based activities with cultural discoveries.
Japan and South Korea beyond the crowds
In northern Japan, Lake Towada and the nearby Oirase Gorge provide an alternative to the country’s better-known autumn destinations. Located in Aomori Prefecture, the area is characterised by dense beech and maple forests, flowing streams and waterfalls.
Autumn colours generally reach their peak in late October, when the trees surrounding the gorge turn shades of yellow, orange and red. Walking trails follow the river through the valley, offering visitors opportunities to experience momiji-gari, the Japanese tradition of appreciating autumn foliage.
The combination of forest scenery and accessible walking routes makes the region particularly attractive to travellers interested in outdoor activities and photography.
In South Korea, Agoda recommends Andong, a historic city southeast of Seoul. Its best-known attraction is Hahoe Folk Village, a UNESCO World Heritage site where traditional houses and historic architecture preserve elements of Korea’s cultural heritage.
Between late October and early November, the surrounding landscape takes on autumn colours. The quieter atmosphere of the historic village and nearby countryside provides a different experience from the country's major metropolitan destinations.
Mountain forests and Himalayan landscapes
Taiwan’s Taipingshan, in Yilan County, offers another opportunity to explore autumn scenery away from the busiest tourist areas. The mountainous forest region is known for its native Taiwan beech trees, maple forests and walking routes developed along former logging trails.
During November, copper and red foliage contrasts with the mist that frequently covers the surrounding mountains. Hot springs and forest paths add further attractions for visitors seeking a combination of nature and relaxation.
In northern India, the Kashmir Valley provides a different autumn landscape. Around Srinagar and Pahalgam, chinar trees become the defining feature of the season as their broad leaves turn deep red.
The transformation is particularly visible in Srinagar’s historic Mughal gardens and across the valley’s orchards. The main foliage period extends from late October into November, overlapping with Diwali celebrations on 8 November 2026.
The combination of seasonal colours, historic gardens and cultural festivities creates opportunities for travellers interested in both landscapes and regional traditions.
Nepal’s Pokhara completes Agoda’s selection. Rather than being primarily associated with colourful deciduous forests, the destination is particularly attractive in autumn because of its clear mountain views and favourable conditions for outdoor activities.
The season generally brings improved visibility of the Annapurna range, relatively dry trekking routes and agricultural terraces turning golden after the growing season.
Early November also brings Tihar, Nepal’s festival of lights. During the celebrations, marigold decorations and oil lamps transform streets and homes, adding a cultural dimension to visits during the autumn travel season.
Seasonal experiences shape travel choices
For Agoda, the appeal of these destinations lies in the opportunity to combine natural scenery with local experiences rather than concentrating exclusively on internationally established tourist attractions.
“Autumn color gives travelers a reason to go somewhere new and slow down once they're there,” said Jay Lee, Regional Director, North Asia at Agoda.
The company sees particular potential in destinations where seasonal landscapes encourage longer stays and exploration of surrounding communities. Mountain trails, traditional accommodation, historic settlements and local festivals can all contribute to a more varied travel experience.
For travel planners, the recommendations also illustrate the growing importance of seasonal timing in destination selection. Autumn foliage periods vary considerably across Asia, influenced by latitude, altitude and local weather conditions.
Travellers considering foliage-focused holidays should therefore allow for some flexibility, particularly as peak colours may shift from year to year. The five destinations highlighted by Agoda offer different combinations of nature, culture and outdoor activities, providing alternatives to Asia’s most heavily visited autumn tourism centres.
