H World International is expanding its presence in Egypt with the planned opening of the Steigenberger Hotel Elephantine Island Aswan in December 2026. The five-star property, located on Elephantine Island in the Nile opposite Aswan’s waterfront, is undergoing extensive renovation and repositioning. Previously operated under another hotel brand until April 2026, the property will reopen with 178 rooms, including 15 suites, and a new hospitality concept combining contemporary luxury with traditional Nubian design elements.
The project represents the third hotel developed through the strategic partnership between H World International and Egypt’s Legacy Hospitality Company S.A.E. The two companies already cooperate on the Steigenberger Hotel El Tahrir Cairo and the Steigenberger Cecil Hotel Alexandria. Their latest investment focuses on Aswan, an established destination for cultural tourism and an important stop on Nile cruise itineraries.
The repositioning is designed to strengthen the hotel’s appeal to international leisure travellers seeking accommodation with a distinctive local character. Its island location, accessible by boat, provides a different setting from conventional city hotels. The renovation will cover guest accommodation, restaurants, public spaces and recreational facilities, while incorporating architectural and decorative references to the cultural heritage of Upper Egypt.
Nubian design influences the new hotel concept
The future Steigenberger Hotel Elephantine Island Aswan will introduce a design concept described by its developers as boho luxury, combining contemporary interiors with elements inspired by Nubian craftsmanship and regional traditions.
The refurbishment includes all 178 guest rooms and suites, alongside redesigned public areas intended to reflect the property's riverside location.
Food and beverage facilities will comprise an all-day dining restaurant, a speciality restaurant, a lobby lounge and a pool bar. A dedicated Nubian Tea & Coffee Corner will introduce guests to regional hospitality traditions.
The hotel will also offer meeting and event facilities, including a ballroom, together with spa and fitness areas. Swimming pools and extensive outdoor spaces will take advantage of the island setting and views across the Nile.
Boat access forms an integral part of the property's character, separating the hotel from the surrounding urban environment while maintaining connections with Aswan's principal attractions.
The combination of accommodation, restaurants, wellness facilities and event spaces is intended to serve both leisure guests and travellers visiting Aswan as part of longer Egyptian itineraries.
Aswan strengthens its position in cultural tourism
Aswan is among Egypt's most important destinations for visitors interested in the country's ancient history, Nile landscapes and Nubian culture.
Located in Upper Egypt, the city serves as a departure or arrival point for numerous Nile cruises and provides access to archaeological sites and cultural attractions.
Among the best-known landmarks are the Temple of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis, and the Aswan High Dam. The surrounding region also offers traditional Nubian villages, river excursions and distinctive desert landscapes.
Elephantine Island itself has considerable historical significance. Situated directly opposite Aswan's riverside promenade, it contains archaeological remains documenting thousands of years of settlement and commercial activity along the Nile.
The island's location has long made it an important point of contact between ancient Egypt and regions farther south.
For international visitors, the combination of archaeological heritage, river scenery and local cultural traditions gives Aswan a different tourism profile from Egypt's Red Sea resorts.
The repositioned Steigenberger property is intended to build on these characteristics by offering a luxury hotel experience closely connected to its surroundings.
Third project with Legacy Hospitality
The Elephantine Island project further develops the cooperation between H World International and Legacy Hospitality Company.
Their existing partnership includes two established Egyptian properties: the Steigenberger Hotel El Tahrir Cairo, located in the capital, and the Steigenberger Cecil Hotel Alexandria, a historic hotel overlooking the Mediterranean.
With the addition of Aswan, the cooperation will cover three destinations representing different segments of Egypt's tourism market.
Cairo is a major centre for cultural and business travel, Alexandria combines urban heritage with Mediterranean tourism, and Aswan is particularly associated with Nile cruises and archaeological excursions.
Dr. Stephan Hungeling, Chief Executive Officer of H World International, described the new hotel as an important step in the company's Egyptian expansion strategy.
He emphasised Aswan's cultural significance and tourism potential, highlighting the intention to combine Steigenberger's hospitality standards with the identity of Nubian culture.
Hisham Talaat Moustafa, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Legacy Hospitality Company, identified the project as part of a broader strategy to modernise established hotel properties while retaining their historical and regional character.
The cooperation focuses on repositioning hotels in prominent Egyptian destinations rather than developing entirely new properties.
This approach allows existing buildings and locations to be adapted to changing expectations in the international hospitality market.
Opening planned for December 2026
The renovation and transformation process is currently underway, with the opening under the Steigenberger Hotels & Resorts brand scheduled for December 2026.
Once completed, the hotel will offer 163 rooms and 15 suites, supported by restaurants, wellness facilities and meeting spaces.
The project adds another internationally branded luxury property to Aswan's accommodation market and strengthens the presence of H World International in Upper Egypt.
For travel operators specialising in Egypt, the hotel will provide an additional accommodation option for programmes combining Nile cruises, archaeological excursions and extended stays in Aswan.
Its island setting and Nubian-inspired design are expected to differentiate the property from conventional urban accommodation, particularly for travellers seeking a combination of cultural experiences and resort-style facilities.
The December opening will also coincide with the beginning of Egypt's principal winter travel season, when Upper Egypt traditionally attracts visitors interested in exploring archaeological sites and the Nile Valley under comparatively mild weather conditions.
