Lufthansa Airlines has successfully completed its
revalidation under the European Union’s EMAS environmental management system
for the 2025 reporting year. The renewed recognition covers the airline’s
environmental management processes and the measurable progress achieved in both
flight operations and ground activities.
For the first time, Lufthansa City Airlines and
Lufthansa Aviation GmbH have also been validated under the Eco-Management and
Audit Scheme, extending the framework to additional companies within the
Lufthansa environment.
EMAS combines EU requirements with ISO 14001
EMAS is a voluntary environmental management
instrument developed by the European Union. It is designed to help companies
and organisations systematically assess and continuously improve their
environmental performance.
The scheme incorporates the requirements of the
international ISO 14001 environmental management standard and adds further
obligations, including transparency and documented environmental performance.
Fuel efficiency at the centre of the latest assessment
The latest environmental statement places particular
emphasis on operational fuel efficiency. Lufthansa Airlines outlines how
measures throughout the flight process can contribute to reducing kerosene
consumption.
These measures begin with flight planning and continue
through cruise operations, approach and landing as well as ground procedures.
The objective is to identify efficiency gains at each stage of the operation
and translate them into measurable fuel savings.
Environmental performance documented publicly
The validation also assesses how the companies
implement environmental measures and monitor progress over time.
Lufthansa Airlines has documented the results and
additional initiatives in its 2026 Environmental Statement. The report provides
further details on the company’s environmental management system and the
measures being taken to improve operational efficiency and environmental
performance.
