Indonesian airline TransNusa has launched its first scheduled service between Melbourne and Bali, expanding its presence in the Australian market and strengthening Bali's role as a connecting hub for travel across Indonesia and Southeast Asia. The inaugural flight on October 20, 2026, marks another step in the carrier's international expansion strategy.
The new connection initially operates four times a week, with flights scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. From November 15, TransNusa plans to increase the frequency to daily service. Introductory one-way fares start at AUD 299, with the airline positioning its product as an alternative to conventional low-cost services on the competitive Australia–Indonesia corridor.
Beyond serving holidaymakers travelling directly to Bali, TransNusa intends to use the route to attract Australian passengers connecting to other Indonesian islands and international destinations. The airline's broader network includes domestic destinations such as Lombok, Bima and Manado, alongside international connections to Singapore, Guangzhou and Phuket. This approach could provide additional opportunities for tourism businesses in destinations beyond Bali's established resort areas.
Australian expansion builds on Perth success
The Melbourne launch follows a period of rapid growth for TransNusa in Western Australia. According to the airline, its Perth operations expanded from three weekly flights in April 2025 to 21 weekly services by July 2026.
TransNusa also reports that it has secured a 20 percent market share in Perth, although the company has not specified the precise market segment or measurement period behind that figure.
The expansion reflects the airline's ambition to develop a stronger presence in Australia while connecting passengers with destinations throughout the Indonesian archipelago.
“The launch of the Melbourne-Bali route represents a monumental step forward in TransNusa’s international expansion strategy. It strengthens Bali’s position as a premier gateway between Australia and Asia, while giving travellers a compelling new choice that combines connectivity, value, and a distinctly premium travel experience,” said Datuk Bernard Francis, Group Chief Executive Officer of TransNusa.
The airline describes itself as a Premium Service Carrier, combining competitive fares with selected services included in its standard tickets. According to TransNusa, basic fares include baggage allowances, complimentary drinking water and snacks.
Flight schedules support onward travel
The new route has been scheduled to accommodate both leisure and business passengers while facilitating connections through Bali's I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport.
Flight 8B 18 departs Bali at 20:45 and arrives in Melbourne at 05:40 the following morning. The return service, flight 8B 19, leaves Melbourne at 06:25 and reaches Bali at 09:40. All times are local.
TransNusa is promoting its wider network under the concept of Beyond Bali, encouraging Australian passengers to combine a Bali holiday with visits to other destinations across Indonesia.
The airline highlights opportunities to explore destinations such as Wakatobi, known for its marine ecosystems, as well as Lombok, Manado and Bima. Connections to major Asian cities are also part of the strategy, allowing Bali to function as an intermediate point for longer regional itineraries.
For Indonesian tourism operators, this network approach offers potential benefits beyond the island's established tourism industry. Additional international access could support regional hotels, local tour providers, transport companies and businesses offering nature-based and cultural experiences.
However, the availability and convenience of individual connections will depend on flight schedules, operating days and booking arrangements.
Bali gains another international gateway
Australia remains an important source market for Indonesian tourism, particularly for Bali. The addition of Melbourne gives TransNusa a second major Australian market alongside Perth and increases competition on routes connecting Australia with Indonesia.
The carrier's strategy also reflects a broader opportunity for regional tourism development: using Bali's international accessibility to introduce overseas visitors to destinations that receive less direct international air service.
For travel agents and tour operators, the new flights provide another option for building itineraries combining Bali with other Indonesian islands or destinations elsewhere in Asia.
The planned increase to daily operations from November 15 should make the route more flexible for holiday planning and onward connections, although TransNusa has not published specific passenger forecasts for the Melbourne service.
Tickets are available through the airline's own booking channels and authorised travel platforms.
