Solo Travel Gains Ground Among South Korean Travelers

Solo travel is becoming increasingly popular among South Korean travelers. According to new data from digital travel platform Agoda, interest in traveling alone rose by 9% compared with the previous year. Accommodation searches increased by 7% for domestic trips and by 11% for international journeys.

The findings are based on accommodation searches made by South Korean solo travelers during the first five months of 2026. Seoul ranked as the most sought-after domestic destination, followed by Jeju, Busan, Incheon and Gangneung.

Gangneung and Donghae benefit from domestic demand

Gangneung continues to attract independent travelers looking for a relaxing coastal break. Located around two hours from Seoul by KTX high-speed rail, the city combines beaches, lifestyle complexes, cafés, restaurants and popular photo locations.

Local tourism businesses are also increasingly adapting to solo guests. Many restaurants now offer single-serving meals, making it easier for independent visitors to experience the region’s cuisine.

Donghae recorded the fastest growth among domestic destinations. Accommodation searches by solo travelers rose by 28% year on year. Agoda attributed part of this development to local initiatives aimed at improving the visitor experience, including the city’s Solo Traveler-Friendly Business Certification Program.

Japan dominates international rankings

Japan remained the leading international destination for South Korean solo travelers. Tokyo took first place, followed by Osaka and Fukuoka.

The destinations benefit from their geographical proximity, efficient public transport systems and reputation for safety, all of which are particularly important for people traveling alone. Jakarta and Da Nang completed the five most popular international destinations.

Jakarta records exceptional growth

Jakarta showed the strongest increase in international demand, with accommodation searches rising more than thirtyfold. The Indonesian capital has benefited from a new flight connection launched in April as well as promotional airfares.

The city has also become an important destination for K-pop concerts and fan meetings. Artists including ATEEZ, aespa, EXO and NCT WISH performed in Jakarta during the first half of the year.

Beyond entertainment events, Jakarta is attracting travelers with historical attractions, shopping, local cuisine and island-hopping opportunities. The weakening Indonesian rupiah has also made the destination comparatively affordable for international visitors.

March was the most popular travel month

March emerged as the most popular month for solo trips during the first five months of 2026, followed by January, April, February and May.

Agoda linked the popularity of March to the beginning of spring, when mild temperatures, flowering landscapes, festivals and seasonal events create favorable conditions for both domestic and international travel.

“More travelers are expressing interest in solo journeys, drawn by the convenience, flexibility, and opportunity to recharge on their own terms,” said Alex Park, Country Director South Korea at Agoda.

According to Agoda’s 2026 Travel Outlook Report, almost one in four respondents plans to travel alone this year. The company said it intends to support this segment through combined offers for flights, accommodation and activities.
