Senegal's government bans officials from traveling abroad
Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, has banned cabinet members from traveling abroad unless absolutely essential. This drastic measure comes in response to the global surge in crude oil prices, triggered by the conflict in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has pushed the price per barrel to nearly double the level forecast in the African country’s budget.

According to the BBC, Sonko himself has canceled his official visits to Niger, Spain, and France, and is preparing a new package of reforms to cut public spending, which will be announced next week.

The energy crisis has struck the Senegalese economy hard; despite its emerging hydrocarbon industry, the country remains heavily dependent on fuel imports.

A similar situation is spreading across the continent, where countries such as South Africa, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe are already implementing tax reductions or rationing of certain services.
