Magnitude 7.5 earthquake hits Papua New Guinea

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck the Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said on Tuesday.

The epicenter of the tremor was 48 kilometers (around 30 miles) northeast of Kokopo city of East New Britain, Papua New Guinea, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (around 6.2 miles), said the USGS.

Authorities called a tsunami warning in the region after the quake, with no casualties having yet been reported.

The region has seen frequent large-scale tremors, with a 7.5 magnitude earthquake and its resulting tsunami hitting Palu, Indonesia on Sept. 28, 2018, killing 4,340. (AA)
