Istanbul’ s high society seems to be taken with cafés, antiques, comfortable boutique hotels and the old wind mills one can see here and there. People flock to the little town which was formerly dominated by Greeks and buy off old houses and have them lovingly restored. They now are being followed by gastronomy, bars and discos and it is becoming more and more colourful here in the summer time. The peninsula Çeşme can be recommended for some other reasons, too: strong winds make it to the surfing paradise of the country, and natural thermal springs let one wellness hotel after the other sprout.
With the antique Erythrai the peninsula Çeşme also offers a ruin site with remarkable objects of interest. Although Erythrai has not been dug up yet, the walls and the theatre near the village Ildırı are impressive. The reddish stones seem to be the same that has been used for the Pergamon, and Erythrai just as Pergamon probably experienced its time of prosperity in this age of Hellenism. |
