Even the drive from Eskişehir via the district town Seyitgazi is an experience. Continuously ascending the way leads through woods up to the plateau of the old “Phrygia Salutaris”, the healthy Phrygia.
Tuff stone rocks which are interfused by caves remind of the landscape of Cappadocia, and they prove that people have settled here since times unmemorable. And then you suddenly see in Yazılıkaya gigantic reliefs, deeply cut into the stone of the rock: Phrygian grave sanctuaries and shrines of the mother goddess Kybele ornate the hill from almost all sides.
Cisterns deeply cut into the rocks show that there must have been a large settlement once, yet the constructions must have been out of wood in this densely wooded area – very little is seen of them anymore. Nevertheless, a round trip under the guidance of the ruin guard Veysel is interesting, and one can relax afterwards with a cup of tea in the guestroom of the parish hall of the village. |
