Travel sites win court battle with Florida counties
Friday, 20. July 2012, 16:27
Florida counties have lost a legal battle in a dispute with online travel companies.
The suit brought by Broward County argues that websites
including Orbitz and Expedia are not paying sufficient tourist taxes on hotel
rooms booked through the sites, the News Service of Florida reported.
Seventeen Florida counties have filed similar claims.
Leon County Circuit Judge Terry Lewis ruled for the travel
companies, finding they owe only local tourist taxes on the amounts they pay
for hotel rooms, not the higher amounts that travelers pay, the News Service
reported.
State lawmakers have considered advancing a law for
several years that would settle this long-running dispute.
